South African Mountain Incidents

During 2004 the security-related incidents in South African mountains started to gain a high profile. There were several cases of people being attacked in various mountain areas, some of which resulted in high-profile visibility.

As a consequence this database was born. Its purpose is:
  • To provide a place for people to report what they have seen or experienced
  • To provide a place for people to share the lessons they've learnt
  • To provide a place for outdoors users to gain forewarning of problem areas
  • To provide a place which the land-owners and -managers can use to track activity
  • To provide a tool to spot emerging trends
This database is not perfect, either:
  • The places with the best levels of reporting will look the worst because they have the most data.
  • Probabilities cannot be determined because there's no activity intensity level to compare to.
